Loomi: AI Agentic Desktop Pet

Journal 2026

Reminiscing on the 90’s and early 2000’s lately, I spent my weekend thinking about “Desktop Buddies” like Neko, Shimeji and the infamous Clippy.

It got me wondering, with today’s AI stack these companions can finally do more than just wander aimlessly or just annoy you in Microsoft Word.

So I worked on Loomi, a hobby project to bring the classic “desktop pet” into 2026. Unlike the pets of the past, Loomi has a brain (powered by Qwen3-VL) and equipped with tools so it can actually “see” my screen, take screenshots, search the web for quick info, and even open applications. It is built to be simple, lightweight and local, sitting right on the desktop.

p.s. I intentionally kept this simple rather than working on a full blown personal agent (it is not meant to be a Clawdbot/OpenClaw), it is just a fun way to experiment with a simple Agentic AI agent that has a cute visual presence on the desktop.
